There are tons of tutorials and how-to videos on makeup but why haven’t the girls got it? I have the answer to that question!

I used to be really good at makeup and would get tons of compliments. Then one day I stopped doing my makeup as much and I finally felt like everybody else who struggled with makeup application. However, I knew saying the words, “I forgot how to do makeup” couldn’t be true for me because I’m a makeup artist. However, the way my makeup came out was very much giving…amnesia.

So, what was my problem: I simply lacked a process and you probably do too.

I took a notebook and began writing all the steps I needed to perform in order to create the makeup look. I realized every routine should focus on these steps: Skin Prep, Foundation, Eyebrows, Concealer, Contour, Highlight/Blush

Step 1: Skin Routine & Prep

• Cleanser, Moisturizer, & Sunscreen (SPF)
• Introduce toners and serums to your routine

Step 2: Foundation

• Apply foundation (skip under eyes)
  • Paint foundation onto face using a foundation brush then pat (for full coverage) 
• Blend with sponge to help improve coverage
• Set foundation with foundation powder

Step 3: Eyes

• Flat concealer brush for precision
• Conceal under arch using a concealer 1 shade lighter and create base
• Conceal over brows

Step 4: Conceal 

• Apply concealer either 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation
• Look up while blending and set immediately

Step 5: Contour

• Apply powdered contour towards the edges of concealer.
• If using cream contour, before setting concealer with translucent powder, apply cream to the edges of concealer

Step 6: Highlight and Blush Powder

• Make a small grin and add blush to the balls of your cheeks. 
• Use the high parts of your cheeks to apply highlight.

Once I’ve followed my process, nervousness disappeared, and clarity improved. What is key is to follow a process for each step in order to minimize confusion with your makeup routine. If you want to improve only one process than focus on that process only. No need to change your other steps if you’re satisfied with it.
