That’s a great question that I don’t feel enough people are asking!

In the beginning stages as a makeup artist, I was always nervous to do makeup for other people. I was scared that I was going to mess up. Thankfully, I didn’t mess up anyone’s makeup, but I could never truly be confident no matter how much I improved on my skills.

It became even more frustrating because, as we know, life happens and there were moments where I doing makeup and I would feel like a complete beginner when I would try to approach makeup again. Until one day, I decided to do this one thing that changed how my makeup looked.

I wrote my process down.

I realized that my anxiety was rooted in not knowing what to do and also not being sure if what I was doing was correct. I was always hung up on what type of product or brand and lacking in understanding on my process and its impact on my makeup looks.

After writing my process, here’s the order that I follow every time I do my makeup and you can follow this too:

Foundation

Eyebrows

Concealer

Contour

Highlight/Blush

I identified these five steps as important to any makeup look you want to create. Whether I’m creating a makeup look to go to work or for a photoshoot, I’m always considering these steps.

Now, do I follow this exact order every time? No. Sometimes, I start my makeup with my foundation, other times with my concealer, and if I’m trying something new, contour. Key takeaway is to create a process using the steps you already enjoy and use for your makeup routine and follow it.
